Well, I use my numbering system in soooooo many ways. From the first day of school they learn their number. I put their name AND number on their name plate and agenda. I also put their number on the themed pencil I give them on the first day (so they for sure all have a pencil). After colour coordinating their duotangs (aka pronged folders) ***ANOTHER MUST IN MY BOOKS!!!!*** I also put their number on them. Now if any of their items get lost they can easily find their home, no matter if they are just a lonely pencil. Another reason I number duotangs is for me. It makes it easy to pick them up by calling their number or having students hand them in number order to bucket and quickly seeing which are missing. Students love to help put them in order for me too :) another bonus. I also number notebooks for the same reasons.
When we write on anything they put their Name#, Date. We also say it as a chant "Name, #, Date" to remind students to include those. Same great organization reasons as my duotangs and notebooks.
I also have them line up in number order, EVERY SINGLE TIME----CONSISTENCY makes a teacher's life so much easier. This helps me to easily see who is missing from our line and helps students to line up very quickly. They also sit at assembly in this order, although in two lines, which means I can take attendance without a class list right then and there.
I do use numbering in fun ways too. Kids love the random number pickers online, which makes picking students for things like presenting order or making random groups quick and easy. I also LOVE The Great Pencil Challenge from LadyBugsTeacherFiles and so have my students. ***If you don't know what that is click the link and change your life! Haha a bit dramatic, but really it's awesome.***
